I like to re-read my earlier posts when trying to inspire myself for the next post. Lucky I do because I was immediately inspired. "When did I become old" jumped out at me. I had forgotten about that title, which then led me to think about memory, a great topic for cognitive science for learning. I'm sure many of you have noticed some memory issues. I know I have! I wanted to know why, and how to help my memory. I am aware that, as we age, memory becomes less fluid, and that doing activities such as crossword puzzles, help maintain memory. Having Alzheimer's disease that runs quite strongly in my family, I am very cognitive of my brain. I have also noticed my students working in different ways to remember material. My students ages range from early 20's to early 60's. Some are single and working, others going to school, and still others working and have families. All these factors can contribute to difficulty in remembering skills. It's the strategies to remember that are important. One of the most important ones is reading out loud/speaking out loud. I knew I was doing something right!!! Having my students speak aloud as they are performing their skills does help with retention, which in turn, will make better first aid attendants. Check out this site - it offers great info, and may make you feel better about your memory.
