To Be or Not To Be - Motivated that is

Motivation - the word itself can lead to a lack of it!! I found I was having difficulty in deciding the avenue I wanted to take with this particular blog. I really enjoyed the tedTalk video by Daniel Pink, relating his theory on the 3 stages of motivation - autonomy, mastery and purpose - that our illustrious facilitator found as a resource. It was very illuminating and funny! But I wanted to be somewhat unique in my approach, so to the internet I went. I did find many good articles, but not really delving into the direction I wanted.

Then I found this website, boundless psychology. What an interesting site! I was directed to this great article on intrinsic vs extrinsic motivation, and the incentive theory of motivation was thrown in as well. The article does a fantastic job of explaining the difference between intrisnic and extrinsic motivation, and how extrinsic motivators can decrease intrinsic motivators over time. Getting paid can lead to the expectation of reward, so when the reward is taken away, the motivation to do the task is diminished, even if the person originally enjoyed the task intrinsically.

The incentive theory demonstrates the different extrinsic motivators and how they affect the intrinsic reward. For instance, money can be negative, whereas praise is positive. It also discusses other factors like self-esteem and personality traits such as anxiety and jealousy, and how an extrinsic motivator would affect people differently. For instance, praise would not negatively affect a person with high self-esteem, but would cause a person with low self-esteem to work hard solely for the praise.

Check out this website, not only for this article! There are a host of good articles here!!
