Trendy first Aid

The year is 1959. What is happening in the world of first aid? Knowledge of first aid is very important for this time period, forestry, mining and fishing are in full swing. They are also some of the most dangerous jobs. What to do?

I have found 2 sites that are quite interesting, showing/describing first aid in 1959. The above is a video of some first aid practices in 1959. Note the back pressure/arm lift (Holger Nielson method) for ventilations. No longer done!!

The second is a PDF file from the British/Australian army of 1959. The Elements of First Aid 1959.PDF explains how to perform various procedures out in the field. Holger Nielson method, setting broken bones, bleeds, and also nuclear weapons and war gases.

Zoom into 2016, and really, a lot is still the same. Slinging injuries, stopping bleeds with pressure, even tourniquets will be making a come back by July 2017! I really didn't realize how much the science has not changed for first aid. Sure, we no longer press the back and lift the arms to help someone breathe, but many skills are still the same. When research and science discover easier and more effective methods for helping someone, changes will be seen. That's the trend in first aid!!
